Pillow Crafts For Kids

Decorative plastic gems can quickly dress up any pillow project.

Handmade pillows are an easy way to allow your child to decorate and personalize her own space. With felt or fleece and a few simple decorative craft pieces such as gems and felt shapes, you can create a one-of-a-kind project for proud display on the crafter's bed. Use these projects for a few hours of weekend entertainment or as a group activity for a birthday party or Girl Scout meeting.

No-Sew Pillows

Soft fleece pillows are easy to make in any shape and size, and you can assemble them with no sewing, making this an ideal project for children. The only skill needed is the ability to tie a knot. Begin by cutting two pieces of fleece in the shape of your desired pillow. Make the shape 8 inches larger than you want your finished pillow to be. Line up the pieces of fleece, and lay them on top of one another. Use a disappearing ink pen to mark the shape of your finished pillow, which will be 4 inches from the edges of your fleece. Cut fringe along the edges, 1-inch thick and 4-inches long. Cut both pieces at once to ensure that the fringe matches up perfectly.

Work around the pillow, knotting the fringe from the top and bottom piece together. If you use two contrasting fleece colors, the resulting fringe will have a fun, two-toned look. Stop when you have 4 to 6 inches of pillow left untied. Fill the shape with fiberfill to your desired fullness, and then knot the remaining the fringe to finish.

Tooth Fairy Pillow

A tooth fairy pillow is a great way to get kids excited about losing teeth and leaving them out for the tooth fairy. This special pillow can also make the process easier than leaving a lost tooth under the child's pillow. Cut two pieces of felt to the shape of a tooth. Cut a third piece in the shape of a small square, just big enough to make a pocket for the lost tooth and the treat that the tooth fairy may leave in exchange. Sew three sides of the pocket to the center of one of the tooth pieces. Line up the two tooth-shaped pieces with the pocket facing inward, toward the other piece of fabric. Sew the sides and bottom of the pillow together with a sewing machine or by hand. Turn inside out, fill with fiberfill and sew the last side.

Present the tooth fairy pillow to your child, and provide fabric glue, gems, small felt shapes, glitter glue and other embellishments for her to decorate the pillow with. You can also tie a ribbon or string to upper corners of the pillow and hang the finished project from a doorknob or bedpost.

Princess Pillow

A princess pillow is the perfect place for a little princess to rest her head. This project is the perfect piece of decor for a princess-themed bedroom. Purchase or sew a simple, round pillow. Provide a feather boa, fabric letters, gems, fabric glue and glitter glue for personalizing the pillow. Help the child glue or sew the feather boa around the edge of the pillow. Affix the other decorations to the front. Spell out the princess's name for a personalized project.
