How To Look After Cats At 10 Days Old

Kittens instinctively groom themselves, but may need some help.

Kittens are adorable bundles of energy and a constant source of amusement with their curiosity and playful antics. A 10-week-old kitten will miss his mother and siblings when you bring it home, and may need some extra attention in those first few days. Relatively low-maintenance, kittens need love, food, health care and a warm, safe environment. The first need is easy to comply with, and the others will be easy to learn.

Instructions

1. Provide a 10-week-old kitten with a warm bed to sleep in. Place the bed in a warm room. Kittens sleep in short spurts, with periods of rest and activity during the day and night.

2. Feed a 10-week-old kitten a can of kitten food mixed with 1 tsp. of dry kitten food a day. This should be broken up into four feedings. Provide the kitten with a bowl of fresh water at all times.

3. Play with your kitten using cat toys, such as feathers on long sticks and stuffed animals. Provide it with balls and toys it can play with alone.

4. Bring your kitten to see a veterinarian for a checkup, deworming and vaccines when it is 10 weeks old. Take it for more vaccines at 15 weeks old and 1 year old.

5. Trim the kitten's nails with a nail clipper. Hold it tightly, and clip the tips off, avoiding the quick at the base of the nail.

6. Place a cat scratching post in an area where the kitten plays the most. Encourage it to climb and scratch on the post instead of your furniture.

7. Provide your kitten with a litter box filled with nonclumping litter. Kittens lick their paws and the clumping litter can be toxic to them. Introduce clumping litter no earlier than at three months old.
