Halloween Wedding Focal point Ideas

Avoid centerpieces that look like preschool craft projects.

Whether you're throwing a slightly spooky affair or an all-out creepfest, the Halloween decor will set the tone for the reception. Plastic pumpkins or spiders on the tables will make guests feel that they're at a child's party. Use dark flowers and antique elements to create centerpieces that are spooky and adult.

Dark Flowers

For a Gothic and elegant flower arrangement, start with antique silver pails or vases. Black or deep red vases will also work, although these might look slightly more creepy than silver. Choose dark flowers such as black roses or deep red calla lilies. Arrange the flowers inside the vase and add black feathers as accents. When each centerpiece is placed on the table, arrange votive candles around the base of the vase. When lit, the candles will throw shadows off the flowers.

Pumpkin Vase

Using a pumpkin as a vase gives this centerpiece a friendly feeling that's ideal for a fun Halloween reception. Because cut pumpkins can go bad quickly, prepare these centerpieces the day before the wedding. Cut the top off of each pumpkin and scoop out the seeds. Place a cup or small cylindrical vase inside the pumpkin. Fill the cup with water and flower food. Trim the ends off of a bouquet of fresh flowers and place them inside the vase.

Candelabra

Candelabra give your Halloween reception a romantic, slightly eerie feeling. Buy one of these multi-armed candle holders for each table. Choose gold candelabra if possible, or paint a plain wooden candelabrum with gold paint. Use a piece of sand paper to scratch up and rub off paint in a few areas to make the candelabra look antique. Put white taper candles in each, then drape pieces of store-bought cobwebs around the base. When the tapers are lit, wax will drip down each candle and add to the spooky Halloween atmosphere.

Silhouettes

Framed silhouettes of creepy characters make understated Halloween centerpieces. Start with a collection of black picture frames. You'll need three or four for each table in different sizes, along with black and white card stock. Draw silhouettes of Halloween shapes such as Frankenstein's head or a cackling witch onto a piece of white card stock. Better Homes and Gardens also offers printable patterns for these shapes on its website. Cut out each pattern, then trace them onto the black card stock. Cut out each image, then glue them onto white card stock. Slip one silhouette into each frame. Arrange the frames in a cluster on each table.
