Design a Stargate themed birthday party for your favorite science fiction fan.
The Stargate sagas began with the movie "Stargate" that aired in the late 1990s. From there the series "Stargate: SG1" was born. This universe later expanded to "Stargate: Atlantis" and "Stargate: Universe." All three series have large followings spanning age groups from middle-aged adults to children as young as 10. The worlds in these sagas are so vast that creating a themed birthday party from them is only made difficult by having too many choices.
Decorations
No Stargate party is complete without a stargate. Create one around the front door with a circular balloon frame covered with paper mache and spray painted pewter. Cut out about six 1 foot wide triangles and snip off the tips. Spray paint these pewter, also, and paint a bright red triangle in the center of each. Glue them at even intervals around the gate. Hang blue shimmering streamers in the center of the gate to make it look like it's on.
Decorate the rest of your home to look like an alien world. The original series featured a world with an Egyptian culture, and all three series frequently feature jungle worlds. Choose one or combine both. For a jungle landscape, gather as many faux and real potted plants into the party area as possible. Embellish the jungle with cardboard birds and primates painted neon colors to look like alien animals. If the area is outside, create a sand pit with a trio of giant, cardboard pyramids behind it. Add cardboard desert lizards around the sand pit.
Activities
Place a bunch of identities in a hat. They should be things like "SG team member," "Jaffa guard," and "alien." Let the guests choose and announce their identity as they walk through the gate. Lead them to a craft table and let the SG team members color camouflage t-shirts with laundry marker, help Jaffa guards choose a forehead insignia and paint it on with face paint, along with a matching shirt. Paint aliens with gray or green face paint, tie feathers in their hair, and help them create colorful t-shirts rife with symbols.
Play Stargate capture the flag with the three teams. Let each group make a flag and then separate the party area into three different territories. Give the soldiers fake blaster guns and the Jaffa foam staffs. The aliens can have water balloons or water guns filled with colored water. Each team must try to capture the other two teams' flags.
Food
Since jungle worlds are part of your theme, you have a good excuse to lay out plenty of fresh fruits and veggies with dips for each. Mix blue powdered drink mix with sparkling water or sparkling apple juice for an interesting looking drink. Put labels like "Abydos punch" and "Altaran moon juice" on soda or juice bottles. You can also serve mini Mars and Milky Way bars for a touch of whimsy. Cut sandwiches into stars, moons and rockets with cookie cutters. You can even create a Stargate cake with a bundt cake pan. Ice it gray and pipe symbols from the Stargate around the edges.
