Down feather sleeping bags cannot be dried successfully in household clothes dryers like other laundered items. Doing so can result in clumping and hardening of the down feathers, which makes the item feel heavy. Knowing how to dry a down feather sleeping bag keeps it from becoming unusable and hard. It also keeps it clean and fresh smelling after enjoying a camping expedition.
Instructions
Outdoors
1. Unzip the wet sleeping bag so that it is unfolded in its entirety.
2. Drape the sleeping bag evenly over a clothesline. Adjust the sleeping bag so that it is stretched out evenly over the line without any bunches in the fabric.
3. Secure the down feather sleeping bag into place with clothes pegs at either end and in the middle.
4. Allow the sleeping bag to dry naturally in the sun for five to eight hours.
Indoors
5. Space two heavy chairs about 4 ft. apart.
6. Drape the wet sleeping bag evenly over the two chairs so that each end of the sleeping bag is on one chair.
7. Pull the ends of the sleeping bag to adjust it. This ensures that it doesn't sink to the floor in the center, between the chairs.
8. Plug a box or upright house fan into a nearby outlet. Position the fan about 3 ft. in front of the wet, draped sleeping bag. Turn the fan on a medium setting.
9. Allow the fan to blow-dry the draping sleeping bag for four or five hours. This method comes in handy when it is raining outside, and you are unable to use an outdoor clothesline.
