Adapt classic dress-up games to add a fairy theme.
Fairy dress-up parties enjoy enduring popularity as a birthday theme for kids. Fairy costumes are easy to create by combining items sourced from the closet, thrift stores and discount stores. Look out for anything glittery or sparkly. A set of wings and a simple tutu are inexpensive to make and create a basic costume. Use the items you have gathered to play some magical fairy dress-up games.
Fairy Dress-Up Race
Divide the players into two teams. Fill a trunk or box for each team with fairy wings, tiaras, feather boas, tutus and wands. Place the trunk about 10 feet from the starting line. The first player from each team races to the trunk, puts the fairy dress-up items on over her regular clothes and spins around, waving her wand to make a fairy spell. She then removes the items, replaces them in the trunk, runs to the back of her line and tags the next player to do the same. Play continues until all the players in each team have had a turn. The first team to finish is the winner.
Fairy Fashion Queen
This craft game will need some preparation of materials in advance. Divide the children into groups of three. One in each group is the model to be dressed as the fairy queen. The other two are the designers. Provide plenty of white, pink and silver crepe paper, tissue paper and a roll of clear sticky tape. Supply feathers, stick-on gems, tinsel and any other sparkly or glittery craft materials that are useful. Have the designers create a fairy queen costume directly on the model using the materials supplied. Suggest they make accessories such as a crown or tiara, a cape, wings and a wand. Allow about an hour for this activity. Take photographs and judge the final creations.
Fairy Fashion Show
Gather together as many fairy dress-up items or props as you can find. Borrow items from friends and family or buy items from thrift and discount stores. Strings of beads, feather boas, tiaras, wands, ribbons and anything sparkly or glittery work well. Have the children enjoy a free-play dress-up session, then stage a fairy fashion show. Each child takes a turn down the catwalk in her fairy costume and has a photograph taken to print as a memento of the event. All the other fairies watch as each girl parades her costume.
Sleepy Fairies
Play this game at the end of the party when all the fairies are exhausted from their dress-up games. Explain to the children that the Fairy Queen has placed a sleeping spell on them. Have them lie down on the floor and try to keep as quiet and still as they can. Play some gentle fairy music to create a magical atmosphere. Have one child act as the Fairy Queen, moving among them to check on them. Any child that moves or makes a sound is out of the game. Continue until one child is left as the winner.
