Steps To Make A Cockatoo Mask

Enjoy the beauty of a cockatoo with your own cockatoo mask.

Cockatoos are a type of parrot. Their beautiful crests and loud voices intrigue many children and adults. This cockatoo mask will feature a yellow crest, though cockatoo crests can be other colors as well. Some have white, black or red crests. Some crests are two-toned. Some have straight feathers, while others have curved feathers. After making this mask, you may wish to experiment with crest colors to create a collection of masks.

Instructions

1. Cut the raised rim off of the paper plate to create a flat circle. Trim the sides of the circle to form an oval shape.

2. Turn the oval so that the long part of the oval is vertical. Measure one third of the way down from the top of the mask. Make a pencil mark. Turn your ruler into a horizontal position and place it at the one third mark. Find the center of the mask. Measure and mark one inch to the right of the center and one inch to the left of the center. Draw a two-inch wide oval beginning at each of the one inch marks. Cut out these ovals to make the eye holes.

3. Draw a triangle with two inch sides on the black construction paper. Cut it out. This is the beak. Glue it two inches beneath the eyes and centered between them.

4. Flip the mask over. Glue the yellow feathers at the top of the mask, centered between the eyes. Place the feathers so that one inch of each is glued to the back of the plate and the remaining length of the feather is sticking up above the plate.

5. Glue the craft stick at the bottom of the mask, centered between the eyes. This is the handle for the mask. Allow to dry.
