How to Make Bendable Rabbit Ears
Bunny rabbit ears are a cute costume accessory for kids and adults alike. Don rabbit ears for Easter and Halloween or for costume parties. Create handcrafted, bendable rabbit ears easily with a headband and a few basic craft materials. Make these basic rabbit ears and, if you like, be creative and expand on the project to create your own, unique rabbit ears. Glitter, sequins, feather boa trim and different types, colors and patterns of fabric are all optional additions for embellishing your rabbit ears.
Instructions
1. Draw and cut out the desired shape and size of the rabbit ears out of white felt. Make two (one for each ear). The rabbit ears can be anywhere from 6 to 12 inches long and should at least 5 inches wide at the widest point. Rabbit ears are long, diamond shapes with a flat cut at the bottom where they connect to the head.
2. Cut the same shapes slightly smaller (approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches smaller on all sides) out of pink felt for the insides of the ears.
3. Glue the pink felt shapes onto the centers of the white felt shapes with fabric glue.
4. Trace and cut the same shapes out of fleece for the backsides of the ears (fake fur can be used instead of fleece).
5. Sandwich the felt shape and the fleece shape facing toward each other (so the backsides are exposed) and sew around the perimeter leaving the bottom of the ears open. Turn the ears inside out.
6. Sew the pink shapes (the inner ears) to the fleece backing by also sewing a seam around the edges of pink shapes. You will be lining the outer edges of the ears, not the pink parts, with wire and stuffing. Sewing the pink shapes will close them off so they stay flat and so a pocket is created for stuffing the outer ears
7. Feed craft wire all the way through the outer ears for creating bendable ears. Cut the wire so that both ends stick out approximately 5 inches from the bottoms of the ears.
8. Stuff the outer ears with cotton stuffing.
9. Cut a piece of fleece (fake fur can also be used) to cover the headband. The fleece will be wrapped around and glued to the headband with the seam at the center of the underside of the headband. Cut two small slits at the points where the ears will be.
10. Feed the wire from the bottoms of the ears through the appropriate slits in the fleece headband covering.
11. Attach the ears to the headband by wrapping wire around the headband. Twist the wire together at the topside of the headband and tuck the excess wire back into the ears.
12. Hand-stitch the bottom edges of the ears to the fleece headband covering. Glue down the fleece to the headband.
