Frugal Homemade Adornments For Any Carnival Party

Mardi Gras beads can be used as party decorations.

Decorations for a Mardi Gras party can be homemade and inexpensive yet still provide a festive and colorful setting. Bead necklaces, feathers and masks are all common items associated with Mardi Gras that are also relatively inexpensive to purchase in large quantities. Use these items to decorate your party space or create your own centerpieces, table and hanging decorations.

Parade Floats

Use rectangular boxes, such as shoe boxes, to create miniature Mardi Gras parade floats for table centerpieces or to decorate buffet tables. Use the box as is, or cut part of the box away to form an interesting shape. If the box has a lid, use craft sticks to suspend the lid over the float to create a canopy. Wrap the float in purple, green or gold wrapping paper or tissue paper. Decorate it with beads, glitter glue, stick-on gems and feathers. Fill the float about halfway with gold metallic cellophane. Lay purple, gold and green Christmas ornaments on top of the cellophane, hook side down. Prop up a Mardi Gras mask in the center of the float.

Centerpieces

Fill mason jars or clear vases with multi-colored bead necklaces. Stick several long colored feathers into the containers. Or use black vases and paint a gold fleur de lis emblem on each side. Candle centerpieces can be inexpensive as well. Place colored candles of varying heights on a mirrored or gold candle dish. Arrange bead necklaces or colored gemstones surrounding the candles.

Mask Garland

Print a Mardi Gras mask template that has been formatted to approximately 4 inches by 5 inches. Trace the template on colored cardstock; you should be able to fit two on each sheet. Punch a hole on either side of each mask making sure to align all of the holes in about the same spot. Cut out the masks and decorate with glitter, feathers, stick-on gemstones and markers. When dry, string them together with inexpensive ribbon and hang over doorways or on the walls. Larger masks can be hung around the party space.

Fleur de Lis Tablecloth Runner

Create a fleur de lis stencil by drawing several of the symbols in a pattern on a piece of cardboard or poster board and then cutting out the symbols. Cut a black plastic tablecloth in half lengthwise and then cut each piece in half lengthwise so that you have four equal pieces. Lay out one piece at a time, and beginning at one end, place the stencil on top of the cloth and spray paint the fleur de lis symbols onto the cloth. Move the stencil down the tablecloth until the entire center has been covered with the pattern. Repeat on the remaining strips, or as many as you need to make one table runner for each table. Allow sufficient drying time before moving or folding up the tablecloth. Lay the decorated black runners in the center of the tables over purple or green tablecloths.
