Decorative Pockets For Art Projects

Pockets from old jeans can be transformed by art projects.

Pockets from old shirts and jeans can find new life. Old postcards can be re-created into decorative and useful pockets. Recycle old clothing and mail to make decorative art projects that can make charming and functional additions to your home.

Make a Quilt

Cut pockets from old shirts, jeans and jackets. The fabric from the front of the pocket is enough. You will need nine pockets.

Cut out nine squares of fabric to use as a base for the quilt. You can buy fabric or use old shirts. Each square of fabric needs to be the same size, about 10 to 12 inches. They do not need to be the same color. You can vary fabric textures and colors.

Lay out the squares on a table in three rows of three. Lay one pocket in the center of each square. Rearrange until you find a pattern you like. Sew the pockets to the fabric squares.

Sew the fabric squares together, allowing for a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Add a backing and polyfiber filler. Face the pocket square quilt to the outside of your back piece. Stack filler on top and pin together. Sew around the edges of the quilt, leaving a small 3-inch opening. Pull the quilt right side out and hand stitch the 3-inch opening.

Add fabric tabs to the top of the quilt to hang. The pocket quilt makes a charming wall d cor for a child's room, and the pockets can be useful storage spots.

Denim Pocket Purse

Cut the pockets out of an old pair of jeans. Cut the entire pocket, including the seam so that the pocket stays intact. Use a hot glue gun to add lace, feathers or other decoration to the pocket. Add details to the top of the pocket or around it borders. Decorate both the front and the back of the pocket.

Glue stringed beads, a long ribbon, or rope to each inside corner of the pocket to make a shoulder strap for your pocket purse. Be careful not to glue the pocket together.

Pocket Magnets

Cut out the entire pocket, including the front and back fabric and the seam to keep the pocket intact.

Add decorative features with a hot glue gun. Add beads, silk flowers or patches to the pocket. If you intend to use the pocket for coupons or lunch money, add wording to the pocket with fabric paint. Glue a magnet to the back of the pocket to display art on the refrigerator.

Decorative Pockets for Cards

Make decorative pockets for gift card giving. Find decorative postcards at gift stores or antique shops. Fold the postcard in half lengthwise, with the decorative side facing out. Open the card and cut a half moon at the top of what you determine to be the front of the card holder.

Cut clear vinyl to fit over the card. Refold the card with the vinyl over the outside. Sew three edges together, leaving the top open. Use this decorative card holder to give gift cards or money.
