Knitted afghans provide warmth and texture to a room.
Homemade knit afghans (knitted blankets) can be both an integral design accessory in a room---adding color and texture---and a utilitarian item, used for chilly days. Often, an afghan will sport fringe on two opposite ends of the throw. However, another option for finishing edges is to create a knit scalloped rim around the entire perimeter of the afghan. The Feather and Fan pattern is a fairly easy scalloped knitted edge pattern.
Instructions
Feather and Fan Pattern for Scalloped Knitted Edge
1. Work in 18-stitch units, picking up stitches with yarn and knitting needles, and working along one side of the afghan at a time. When the first side's scallops are knitted, continue with the second side of the afghan, working the pattern as for the first side until all sides are completed.
2. Row 1: (wrong side of the afghan) Knit.
3. Row 2: Turn, and knit.
4. Row 3: Turn, and purl.
5. Row 4: *[Knit 2 together] 3 times; [yarn over, knit 1] 6 times; [knit 2 together] 3 times; repeat from * to the end of the row.
6. Finish off edging by using either a crochet hook or tapestry needle to weave yarn ends through knitting. Cut off any excess yarn ends with scissors.
