Steps To Make Decorative Oriental Festival Balls

Festival balls similar to these are a cinch to make.

Decorative Oriental festival balls can be used for a variety of reasons--to give as gifts, to decorate for a party, or to show off your Oriental style. Making the festival balls is a fairly simple process that doesn't take a lot of time and is plenty of fun.

Instructions

1. Decorate standard-sized construction paper with the design of your choice. As an alternative, use scrapbook paper, cut down to 9 by 12 inches.

2. Cut three strips of paper for each decorative festival ball you are making. The strips should be 1/2 inch wide and 12 inches long. These strips form the top and bottom of the ball, as well as the handle. If you are using construction paper, use black for this step. If you are using scrapbook paper, you have two options: use the same pattern paper or use a contrasting color or pattern.

3. Glue one of the strips along the edge of your construction paper. One strip should go on each long side of the paper. If you are using the same pattern of scrapbook paper, make sure that your patterns are running in the same direction.

4. Fold the paper in half lengthwise, so that your rectangle measures 4 1/2 by 12 inches. Your design should be on the outside of the fold.

5. Cut strips into the rectangle from the fold to the edge of the black strip, at 1/2-inch intervals. Make sure you do not cut the black strips. Unfold your paper.

6. Glue the short ends (9 inches long) of the paper together to create a cylinder. Let the glue dry completely before continuing.

7. Separate the slits of the decorative festival ball at the fold.

8. Attach one end of your last strip of paper to one side of the top of the decorative festival ball with glue. Bend the strip slightly so you can attach the other end to the other side of the ball. Allow the glue to dry.

9. String the decorative Oriental festival balls onto a cord to hang them or use clear fishing line.
