Vinegar Painting Techniques

Change the look of furniture by experimenting with vinegar painting.

For centuries, people have used vinegar painting techniques to create artistic effects simply and cheaply. Refresh the look of your furniture and transform surfaces with a variety of new designs. Use a range of materials, from wood and plastic to paper and metal--apple cider vinegar works best, though you may also use white vinegar.

Wood Grain Effect Technique

Create a wood grain effect by using a sponge soaked in vinegar and powdered paint or glaze. Dragging and dabbling the sponge across a desired surface creates a fine, stippled effect. Stippling, or painting that looks like many small spots, imitates a natural wood grain.

Marbleizing Technique

You may also want to create a marble-like design. Painting a base coat then covering it with a vinegar coat allows the original color to come through under the marbling. The second coat creates the marble effect when vinegar is mottled onto the surface with crumpled material, like newspaper. Using an artist's brush allows the addition of finishing touches, such as veins, or a feather for finer veins.

Ebonizing Technique

Ebonizing techniques darken the surfaces you choose. Combining dark dry pigments with vinegar, then sponging or painting the mixture onto the material, stains the surface. Several coats may be necessary to achieve the desired depth of color. A binder or sealer creates a glossy ebony finish over the coats.
