Mysterious masks are an important element of masquerade parties.
Masquerade parties are colorful, decadent opportunities for guests to express themselves creatively and hosts to lavishly decorate the venue in a riot of colors. At masquerades, extravagance is the the desired atmosphere, but there are many homemade decorations you can create that will minimize expenses while still maintaining a colorful and festive ambiance. Masquerade party guests attend the festivities in masks and they sometimes also wear colorful and elaborate costumes, so many themes are appropriate.
Masks
Masks are a crucial element of any masquerade party and they also constitute an ideal decoration for you to create yourself. Paper masks are simple to make -- cut eye holes in an eight-inch oval, and attach an elastic band to secure to the wearer's head. These types of masks work best for children's parties. Homemade masks can also be crafted with bulk-purchased plastic masks and decorated with markers, sparkly glue, pom-poms, rickrack or any other decorative element. String masks around the room as a banner, or strew on tables sprinkled with confetti. Create a station where guests can decorate and create their own masks, or hand them out at the door as they arrive.
Themes
Choosing the appropriate theme is crucial to creating homemade decorations for your masquerade party. At a Mardi Gras-themed masquerade, decorate the room in traditional colors of purple, green and gold. Create decor with sparkly balloons, swaths of golden fabric, casually draped feather boas or lavishly strewn sparkling confetti. At a Phantom of the Opera or general Victorian-themed masquerade, use more subdued masks and decorate in a regal theme of black and metallic, accented with red or deep purple. Decorate tables with homemade top hats. Cut a circle from black paper, then tape together the short ends of an 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch piece of black paper; mount, standing up, on the circle, and close the top with another circle of paper.
Centerpieces
Centerpieces at a masquerade party should have a whimsical yet luxurious feel. Consider riotous bouquets of flowers in your color scheme; deep red and pure white roses would work well. Scatter tables with confetti and candy pieces wrapped in gold foil. For an eclectic look, spray paint a variety of objects such as candlesticks or old chandeliers in gold and silver and arrange on a table, surrounded by confetti. Or, fill glass vases with strings of sparkling beads or feather boas -- or even thrift store jewelry.
Food
Let the food you serve at your party do double duty as decoration. At a Mardi Gras-themed masquerade, a king cake, decorated with green, purple, and gold sparkles, makes the perfect centerpiece. Tiers of cupcakes, frosted with your masquerade party's colors, are eye-catching and popular. Wrap wine bottles in sparkling beads or thrift store jewelry. A chocolate fountain, complete with strawberries, pretzels and marshmallows will draw a crowd and add a lavish touch to the party.
