DIY dress-up clothes are an easy and fun craft.
A magical fairy, a fabulous flapper, a daring adventurer -- a dress-up box holds a wealth of possibilities for any little girl. Pre-made costumes offer some variety, but they come with a steep price tag. Instead, look to thrift and craft stores for the materials you need to make your own dress-up clothes for little girls. Embellish your finds with sparkles and shine. Then decorate a sturdy cardboard box with a lid for a complete DIY dress-up clothes experience.
Instructions
1. Visit local thrift stores to find second-hand treasures for dress-up boxes. Silky blouses, full skirts, prom and bridesmaid dresses and satin robes can all be found for steep discounts -- a handful of change can mean several new pieces for your child's wardrobe. Think outside the princess box when shopping and find outfits that let your little girl explore whole new worlds. Check the men's and boys' sections for safari-inspired shirts, sturdy boots and other adventurous apparel. Clean and disinfect all purchases before letting your children play with them.
2. Follow some simple patterns to make easy, inexpensive dress-up clothes at home. Cut a circle of fabric approximately thirty-six inches in diameter. Wrap a measuring tape around the child's waist, then cut a circle of the same circumference in the center of the fabric circle. Make a cut (approximately six inches long) down one side of the hole - this will allow the skirt to slip on over the head and shoulders. Hot glue two lengths of sturdy ribbon to each side of the slit to serve as a sash, and tie around the child's waist to close. Make a no-sew flapper costume by gluing strips of fringe horizontally to the front and back of a tank top and a short knee-length cotton skirt. Glue one large feather to the side of a headband to complete the look.
3. Embellish your new-found treasures for a unique look. Sequin tape, fake jewels, feather boas and glitter can all make your garments into couture creations. Make this a fun activity by letting your little girl choose her gems and trims, arranging them in the patterns and places she would like. Make special accessories, too -- glue jewels or silk flowers to headbands for custom tiaras and fairy wreaths. Keep kids safe by leaving the hot glue gun use to the adults.
