The name parakeet refers to multiple species of birds that are often kept as household pets. Budgies, a type of bird that hails from Australia, are part of the parakeet family. All parakeet species require less food and maintenance than larger types of pet birds. Budgies and all other types of parakeets are among the smallest species of parrots. Parakeets can be found in the wild and in captivity all over the world.
Types
Budgies are a specific type of parakeet native to Australia, while there are many other types of parakeets. Among the parakeet types are Alexandrine, Derbyan, Eastern Rosella, Ringneck, Quaker, Plum Head and Regent. Alexandrine parakeets are found in Europe and Asia, while Derbyans are naturally located in Asia. Eastern Rosella and Regent parakeets, like budgies, are found in Australia and New Zealand. Ringneck parakeets are found in Asia and Africa. Plum Heads are found in Europe, while Quaker parakeets are South American.
Appearance
Parakeets and budgies are small, slender birds with slightly curved beaks and tails that taper away from the body. They typically have bright, showy colors and keep their wings to the side. While head colors vary, male budgies have bluish bodies while females have brown-tinted bodies. Ringneck parakeets are identified by a stripe at the base of their neck, while Plum Head parakeets have purple heads. Eastern Rosella and Rosella parakeets have small beaks, while Alexandrine, Quaker and Derbyan parakeets have larger beaks.
Care
Budgies and other parakeets rely on a diet of mixed seeds that can be replicated by products in most pet stores. Mix in fruit and vegetables for complete nutrition. Consistently refill water containers to keep these birds hydrated. Clean the droppings from their cages daily to present a clean environment. Make sure your parakeet cage has enough room for a little bit of flying and make sure that it has bars that can be climbed. Parakeets and budgies enjoy moving around and playing.
Lifespan and Behavior
Parakeets and budgies typically do not live past 10 years, though consistently good care could allow the bird to remain healthy for longer. Parakeets are often both particular and playful, so they will respond to different play techniques, voices and music differently. The birds will let you know its preferences. Keeping multiple parakeets or budgies in the same cage can be dangerous, particularly if they are of the same sex.
