It's legal to hunt nuisance animals such as coyotes without a license in Texas.
Although hunting usually conjures up images of tracking game or stalking fowl, it's also a means for hunters to enjoy the sport of hunting predators, as well as a tool to help ranchers and property owners keep the numbers of nuisance animals away from their property. The type of license required to hunt depends upon the predator you stalk.
Nuisance Animals
Any fur-bearing animal such as coyotes, feral dogs or feral hogs that attack or hunt livestock, poultry or pets is considered a nuisance animal. No license is required to hunt these animals as long as the landowner of the area in which you hunt gives you permission and if the animal is preying or about to prey on livestock.
Black Bears
The state of Texas protects black bears from hunters in all situations. No licenses are issued to hunt bears, nor can hunters kill black bears on private land. A hunter who kills a black bear might be charged with a Class A Parks and Wildlife Code misdemeanor and face up to $4,000 in fines or a year in jail.
Mountain Lions
Mountain lions are unprotected and considered a nuisance animal. They may be hunted without a license at any time.
Double Crested Cormorant
The double crested cormorant is considered a nuisance animal in many situations, but hunters must bear a cormorant control permit to hunt them. The permit is issued to a specific hunter and applies only to areas listed on the permit.
Badgers, Foxes and Ring-Tailed Cats
Hunting foxes, badgers and ring-tailed cats requires a general Texas hunting license. If their fur is to be sold or used commercially, a trapper's license is required.
Exotic Predators
It is illegal to hunt exotic non-indigenous predators such as lions, tigers, cheetahs, bears, hyenas or wolves kept in captivity. It's also illegal to hunt any of those animals that were raised in captivity and released into the wild for the purpose of being hunted.
