The traditional junior prom consists of uncomfortable clothing and a formal atmosphere. With a plan of attack, this event can be transformed into an enjoyable modern party for all.
Gothic
Contact a gothic band to entertain at the event. Select one that performs originals and cover songs. Purchase black and deep red window sheers from your local discount store to line the walls and to act as a backdrop for the band. Use chandeliers for lighting, or black and red lights for the dance floor. Cover tables in black velvet-type material and use silver candleholders with stem candles for centerpieces. Hang bats on long strings from the ceiling. Encourage the student body to wear vampire-themed attire: black daycoats or tailed tuxedos for the men, and Victorian-style dresses or long dark velvet gowns for the women.
Psychedelic
Hire a disc jockey to play Motown, beach music, and the dance and trance music of the late 60s. Hang white doves and peace symbols from the ceiling and use multiple slow spinning lights of reds, oranges, pinks and yellows for the dance floor. Create backdrops for the walls of tie-dyed cloth with yellow smiley faces, and hang beads in all the doorways. Use different printed tablecloths for each table to recreate the poetry café experience. Serve coffee and hot tea along with punch for refreshments.
Encourage the student body to dress the part, with fuzzy vests, loud printed or tie-dye cotton shirts, bell-bottom pants, large sunglasses and headbands for the men; and bold print minidresses, long prairie skirts, flowered hair decorations and sandals or knee boots for the women.
The Roaring 20s
Hire a swing or jazz band to play your event. One that dresses in period clothing will work the best. Set up a movie screen for a backdrop to play old silent movies. Hang 1920s-style model airplanes from the ceiling and use spotlights only for the dance floor.
Encourage the student body to dress the part: zoot suits, fedora hats and wingtip shoes for the men; tasseled flapper dresses, pearls, boas and feather caps for the women. Hire security to dress as 1920s gangsters wearing white three-piece suits and hats. Put punch in old-fashioned tin tubs to mock the speakeasy style of Prohibition.
