How You Can Knit Shawls And Ponchos

A fringe is ften added to a shawl or poncho.

Worn loosely over the shoulders, a shawl is type of wrap that is made either from a triangle or rectangle. Ideal for beginners, the shawl is a simple and easy to follow pattern that uses the basic skills of cast on, knit and bind off. Make one for yourself or as a gift or knit two shawls and sew them together to create a poncho.

Instructions

1. Using needles and yarn, cast on two stitches.

2. Knit the first row. Knit one stitch, bring the yarn forward to make a yarn over and knit one stitch.

3. Knit the second row. Knit one stitch, yarn over, and knit two stitches.

4. Knit the third row. Knit the first stitch, work a yarn over and knit all the stitches to the end of the row.

5. Repeat rows one, two and three until you have 115 stitches on your needle for a poncho or 150 stitches on your needle for a shawl. Bind off all stitches and use the tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

6. For a poncho, repeat steps one through five to make a second triangle.

7. Block the shawl or poncho by laying the knitted piece flat and setting your iron to steam. Move the iron over the piece without actually making contact. Leave the piece to cool and dry. If making a poncho, repeat for the second piece.

8. Make the poncho by laying the two triangles with the longest edge on top. With the tapestry needle and yarn, sew the left side together and then the right side. Sew the top sides together, leaving a 10-inch wide slit for the neck opening.
