A bird hook knife eases the process of gutting small game birds.
Immediately removing the entrails from freshly taken game birds cools the bird, reducing spoilage. A bird hook knife consists of a small foldout cutting blade and a foldout wire hook. The bird hook quickens the process of removing the entrails from small game birds without creating an excess mess on you or your clothing. One method of field dressing game bird includes skinning the bird before removing the entrails. You should avoid skinning the bird in the field, as numerous areas require the feathers attached to the bird until you arrive home for identification purposes.
Instructions
1. Fold out the cutting blade of a bird hook knife.
2. Place the game bird face down on the ground. Make an incision starting at the base of the tail and ending at the base of the pelvic bone with the cutting blade. Do not plunge the cutting blade into the bird. This will rupture internal organs and contaminate the meat.
3. Wipe the cutting blade clean with a rag. Fold the cutting blade into the body of the bird hook knife.
4. Unfold the bird hook from the knife body.
5. Insert the bird hook fully into the incision made with the cutting blade. Spin the bird hook three to four times. Pull the bird hook from the incision. Discard the entrails from the end of the bird hook. Insert the bird hook into the incision and repeat the process until the internal cavity of the bird is empty.
6. Clean the bird hook with a rag before folding it into the knife body.
