Carnival Table Focal point Ideas

Purple, green and gold are considered the official colors of Mardi Gras.

Mardi Gras can be up to a week long celebration that ends on Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, the last day before Lent. The festivities include elaborate carnivals, costumes and parties. Bring this lively atmosphere to your celebration with homemade Mardi Gras centerpieces. It doesn't matter whether you're hosting an actual Mardi Gras or just a regular party with a Mardi Gras theme, decorations are vital to help set the lively mood.

Mask Bouquet

Elaborately decorated half-masks are a classic Mardi Gras symbol and are easy to turn into an impressive table centerpiece. Fill a clear vase with tinsel in traditional Mardi Gras colors, gold, green and purple. Decorate three masks with feathers, ribbons and glitter. Secure the left edge of each mask to a ribbon-wrapped wooden stick, making sure each stick is a different length. Slide the masks into the vase, arranging them so one leans slightly to the left, one slightly to the right and one sticks up in the middle. Place the vase on the table and sprinkle the base with tinsel.

Shoebox Float

Turn a fashion doll, craft supplies and a shoebox into a mini float to create a whimsical Mardi Gras table centerpiece. Remove the lid from the shoebox and place the shoebox upside down. Cover the box with decorating fabric and string beads around the sides to make it look like a float.

Cover the shoebox lid with beads and feathers, front and back. Stand the lid upright and slide it against the back of the box, like a float with a decorative background. Dress a fashion doll in a swimsuit and secure a feather headdress to her head to create a Mardi Gras queen. Sit the doll in a cardboard throne on the middle of the float and place the centerpiece in the middle of the table.

Bright Balloons

Turn to helium-filled latex balloons if you want to create a large Mardi Gras centerpiece quickly. Wrap confetti-patterned paper around a rock and tie with a silver ribbon to create a balloon weight. Select an assortment of plain green, purple and gold balloons with mask or confetti patterns. Fill the balloons with helium and tie with long silver ribbons. Gather the balloons into an oval bouquet shape and tie the ribbons around the balloon weight.

Elegant Feathers

Long feathers bursting from a tower vase work for more than just weddings. Create your own elegant Mardi Gras centerpiece with purple and green feathers in a gold vase. Clean a gold tower vase -- or any tall, thin, sturdy vase with a flared mouth. Slide dark and light purple and green feathers into the vase so that some stick up and some cascade down the sides of the vase. Sprinkle the feathers lightly with gold glitter and place the vase in the middle of the table.
