Wooden Moving Pin Crafts

Make wall art with a wooden rolling pin.

Experienced craftspeople use the materials they have handy to create works of art. One material that is used for a variety of projects is a heavy-duty wooden rolling pin. Typically used for baking and found in most households, wooden rolling pins are the base for numerous wall art and craft projects for the yard.

Rolling Pin Prints

Use a wooden rolling pin to create patterns on butcher paper, blank wrapping paper and fabrics. Make a stencil to fit the circumference of the rolling pin by drawing a design onto cork contact paper and cutting it with a small utility knife. Remove the adhesive from the back of the cork stencil and place it sticky side up on a flat surface. Place the rolling pin at one end of the stencil and slowly roll the pin from one side of the design to the other until it covers the rolling pin. Cover a piece of Plexiglas with a thick layer of paint, then roll the pin over the paint to cover the raised stencils thoroughly. Roll the pin over paper or fabric to transfer the designs.

Rolling Pin Birdhouses

Make birdhouses with wooden rolling pins, plywood, paint and other tools. Saw off one end of the rolling pin with a table saw to be used as the bottom of the birdhouse. Mark the desired birdhouse height on the rolling pin and cut two 45-degree angles to form the roof. Drill one or two 1-inch holes on one side of the rolling pin. Cut a 3-inch-wide strip of 1/2-inch plywood into two pieces, with each measuring 3 by 3.5 inches. Attach these roof pieces to the angled roof cuts on the rolling pin with wood glue. Once the glue is dry, paint the birdhouse with acrylic paint. Add small bunches of moss to the 1-inch-holes and attach a small decorative bird to the roof peak with wood or craft glue.
