Steps To Make Terracotta Pot Creatures

Small terracotta flowerpots and saucers can be assembled and painted to resemble animals. They can be part of seasonal celebrations, such as Thanksgiving turkeys or spring bunnies. Display them inside or out, sitting or hanging. They make one-of-a-kind gifts and children can make them for an art project. The materials can be found at craft stores, garden centers or home improvement outlets. Use your imagination to create your own terracotta pot creature.

Instructions

1. Decide on the animal you want to make out of terracotta pots. The animal you choose will dictate what colors of paint you need, how many pots to use and the configuration of the pots. Find ideas for several terracotta pot animals online at the All Free Crafts website (see Resources).

2. Paint the pots according to the animal you are making. For example, paint them green with darker green spots for a turtle or paint them brown for a dog or a reindeer. Let the paint dry completely.

3. Make arms and legs out of smaller pots than the pot you use for the animal's body.

4. Fasten the pots together with wire and large wooden beads. The wooden beads must be larger than the hole in the bottom of the pots. Make a loop at the end of the wire larger than the hole in the wooden bead. String the bead onto the wire then push the free end of the wire from inside the pot through the hole in the bottom. String it through the hole in a second pot and string on another large bead. Loop the free end of the wire as close to the second bead as possible so the bead cannot fall off.

5. Glue on craft eyes, beads, buttons, feathers, pompoms, polystyrene balls and other small items to make facial features and other aspects of your animal.

6. Make feet, paws or even the head of your animal out of craft clay. Follow the directions for the clay, then paint it your desired color.

7. Spray your creation with acrylic sealer if you are going to display your terracotta animal outside.
