Smooth rocks work well for making rock art.
Making your own rock art is a great way to explore nature and express your creativity on a sunny summer afternoon. Collecting rocks from a creek bed is a wonderful way to notice the nuances of the natural environment. You're likely to encounter crayfish, perhaps a fossil or two, and enjoy some fresh air at the same time. By making rock art out of your finds, you can take your outdoor experience home with you and continue the fun indoors.
Instructions
1. Select small, smooth rocks for your rock art. Round rocks work well, but unusual shapes can be good for rock art too. If you find an odd-shaped rock, take a moment to visualize what kind of animal it resembles and incorporate the shape of the rock into your design.
2. Use a pencil to divide the surface of your rock into segments to be painted later. If you're stuck for an idea, begin with a fish. Draw the eyes and mouth at the front of the rock, and divide the rest of the rock into stripes. Add fins and gills on the sides and draw a tail along one side.
3. Choose a rock with two pointed ends to make a bird. Imagine each pointed end as a wingtip, and use your pencil to draw a pattern of feathers on the top and bottom of each wing. Add a beak to the front of your rock, and a tail at the back.
4. Paint each penciled segment with acrylic paint, using a small round or flat-shaped artist's brush. If you need to switch colors, clean your brush thoroughly with water first.
