Steps To Make A Cloth Hands Fan

Make a fabric fan using basic craft materials.

When you are putting together a Victorian-style costume for a theatrical performance or for Halloween, you can make the costume appear more authentic by including Victorian clothing accessories. For example, add on a fabric hand fan that women would carry to appear more demur and modest. Although you can buy a fabric hand fan at a costume shop, save money by making one yourself using a few inexpensive materials that can be found at a craft store.

Instructions

1. Cut a rectangle from cotton cloth fabric using scissors to measure 6 inches wide and 18 inches long. Select any color or pattern of fabric that you prefer.

2. Lay the cloth horizontally onto a table top and fold the left edge over by 1 inch. Press the fold flat with your hand.

3. Apply tacky glue onto the back of the fold. Then press a craft stick onto the glue-covered fold. Line up the craft stick so the top edge of it is flush with the top edge of the fabric. Allow the glue to dry for 20 minutes.

4. Fold the fabric on the left side again by 1-inch, this time folding the fabric in the opposite direction. Press the fold flat with your hand. Apply tacky glue onto the back side of the fold. Then press another craft stick onto the glue-covered fold. Repeat this process until you have folded and glued on craft sticks along the entire length.

5. Drill a small hole into the end of each craft stick using a small 1/16 size drill bit. Then stack the sticks on top of each other. Insert a brass brad into the sack through the drilled holes and bend the brad once through to secure it into place.

6. Splay out the stacked craft sticks to extend the fabric hand fan.
