How You Can Repair A Leather Chair

Leather repair is possible at home.

Leather furniture or car seats are a beautiful, albeit expensive, addition to any home or automobile, but are subject to damage for a variety of reasons. Sometimes leather seats will tear because they are over worn, or maybe they have suffered damage from a puncture. Whatever the cause, professional leather repair might be costly. It is possible to repair a leather seat using the right method and tools.

Instructions

1. Move your leather seat to a well-ventilated area. If it is a car seat, remove it from the vehicle for easier access. Clean the leather with approved leather cleaner or dish washing detergent and water to remove excess dirt and debris. Rinse with clear water and then dry completely.

2. Condition dry leather for 24 hours or more before performing any leather repair. Sand any areas that are dry and cracked to increase conditioner absorption. Repeat the process if leather is still dry before beginning repair work. Prep the area you are repairing by swabbing with an alcohol pad to remove residue.

3. Replace any missing foam padding with cotton or foam cut to fit the recessed area. Cut any jagged edges, threads or excess cloth and remove from the work area. Use a patch for larger holes that cannot be filled easily. Sew the leather using a top stitch onto the existing leather. For very large holes, you may need to remove the upholstery and sew using a sewing machine.

4. Apply leather glue to small rough scuffs and leather filler to indentations after patching. Use a color additive often found in leather repair kits or sold separately and add to the filler before application. Feather out the color onto the existing leather to blend. Allow to dry or use a blow dryer to speed up the process. Wipe down with a soft cloth to remove any excess. Sand the area gingerly to smooth down the area following repair and follow with a coat of leather conditioner.
