Fill a dressing-up box with plenty of colorful props.
Five-year-old girls are likely to be full of energy and ideas. They enjoy pretend and imaginary games, often acting out scenes from home or school with their dolls and teddies, or dressing-up to act out roles themselves. Craft-based activities and games are popular and encourage creativity. Keep plenty of craft supplies on hand to occupy active girls in absorbing activities.
Pop Star or Princess
Dressing-up games are very often popular with five-year-old girls. Fill a large suitcase or box with items of clothing and props suitable for young girls. Hats, gloves, scarves, glasses, wigs, feather boas, strings of beads, wings and tiaras are all useful items to accessorize simple outfits. Turn dressing-up into a game by making a simple spinner with different costumes written on it such as princess, pop star, fairy, nurse, witch or mermaid. Have the child spin the arrow and then let her enjoy finding the items she will need to create whichever costume it points to.
"Fairy Freeze Tag"
Young girls are often full of energy and enjoy running-around games. This game has simple rules for structured play that five-year-olds will understand. For girls, having a fairy theme lends added appeal to a traditional favorite. One girl is chosen as the "freeze fairy" and another as the "defrost fairy." The game is then played in the same way as traditional tag. When the "freeze fairy" tags someone she remains frozen until the "defrost fairy" thaws her. When a girl has been frozen three times she becomes the new "freeze fairy."
"Find a Flower"
Play this game in open countryside where there are lots of wildflowers growing in the grass and hedgerows. Girls often love picking flowers. Ask them to find as many different flowers as they can. Five-year-old girls are old enough to teach that it is okay to pick wildflowers from the grass, but not flowers from a park or someone's yard. Help them learn about the wildflowers they find by looking them up and trying to identify them online. Show them how to press the flowers in a flower press or between the pages of a heavy book. Later, when the flowers have dried, have them make a picture from the flowers they found.
Doll's Tea Party
Five-year-old girls will enjoy imaginative pretend games and many have favorite dolls or teddies. Let your five-year-old have a tea party for her own dolls, or invite some of her friends to bring theirs along too. Help her prepare real food by cutting out tiny sandwiches with small cookie cutters. Make small cookies and have her help decorate them with frosting. Serve cheese cubes, grapes, dried fruits and small potato chips. Decorate the table with paper doilies and serve the food on small plates. There are plenty of real party games that can she can play with her dolls such as "Musical Statues," "Pass the Parcel" or "Musical Chairs" using beanbags as chairs.
