Quick Knit Patterns & Gifts
Hand-knit gifts don't have to take forever; established and up-and-coming knitwear designers frequently publish patterns for a variety of quick-knit gifts. From versatile scarves and chunky berets to functional dishcloths and cozy felted slippers, knitters in a pinch can find a quick pattern to fit their needs.
French Press Slippers
Melinda Bernardi's ballet-flat-inspired felted wool slippers take only a couple of hours to knit and one or two cycles in a top-loading washing machine to felt. The finished slippers feature decorative flaps over the bottom of the toe that are held in place with wood or leather buttons. The pattern, which costs $7, is available through Bernardi's blog and online Etsy shop.
Bainbridge Scarf
This deceptively simple little scarf consists of a knitted tube and a long knitted tie. When tied in place, the tube transforms into a complicated-looking ascot that's stylish and quick to knit. The scarf is kit in a simple broken-rib stitch that's easy to memorize but interesting enough to keep knitters from getting bored. The pattern is available free through the Pepperknit website (see Resource).
Clover Tweed Dishcloths
Domestic goddesses will love a set of retro-classic clover tweed dishcloths by Strange Yarns. This free pattern features a diamond-look tweed pattern knit entirely in garter stitch. Each dishcloth knits up in an hour, making this a super-quick and easily knitted gift pattern.
Cloud Bolero
Chunky yarn and an open feather and fan stitch make this bolero, by young knitwear designer Ysolda Teague, a great choice for knitters who need a quick knit gift for a fashion-conscious friend or family member. The pattern is available as a bonus through "Yarn Forward" magazine at http://yarnforwardmagazine.co.uk/free-patterns/.
Cabled Mug Cozy
Knit Picks provides a free pattern for a luscious cabled coffee-mug cozy that's a perfect gift for coffee and tea lovers. Thee cozy features a Saxon braid cable and ties that secure the cozy in place around the mug handle. Knitters who want this quick and easy pattern will have to sign up for the Knit Picks mailing list at in order to download it.
