Hire jazz musicians or play 1920s jazz music at your Roaring Twenties party.
Hosting or attending a 1920s-themed party can be a lot of fun. From stylish "flapper" gear to Prohibition-era drinks, there are a number of items that can make your 1920s-themed party more special for your guests and better reflect the "Roaring Twenties" era.
Bar Items
Remember that Prohibition was in effect in the United States from 1920 to 1933, so you'll want your 1920s party to reflect the Prohibition era. There are a number of items that can give your party's bar a "speakeasy" feel. Hide bottles of alcohol in wooden crates, or display them in large metal tubs. Replace the labels with handmade labels saying things like "Bootlegged Gin" or "Tom's Moonshine." Consider making martinis or other gin-based drinks, since gin was popular during Prohibition. For a non-alcoholic beverage, serve colas and other soft drinks in old-fashioned glass bottles.
Costumes
Flappers often wore short bob hairstyles.
No 1920s party is complete without period costumes. Women may want to dress as "flappers," wearing flapper-style sleeveless dresses with dropped waists and hemlines just below the knee. Items like decorative headbands with feathers and boas or long strings of pearls enhance a flapper costume. Men may want to dress as 1920s-era gangsters, wearing pinstriped "Zoot Suits" and dark hats.
Decorations
Art Deco style was popular in the 1920s.
Use goldfish in small fish bowls for centerpieces -- fish and bowls can double as prizes if you plan to have games or prizes for the best costumes at your party. If possible, hang ornate chandeliers around the room. Art Deco was popular during the 1920s -- look for opulent Art Deco table linens and other items. Consider hanging strands of faux pearls around the room.
Food Items
Waldorf salad was popular in the 1920s.
Serve finger foods like tea sandwiches and deviled eggs, which were popular dishes during the 1920s. Make relish trays with items like pickles, olives and radish roses and serve on fancy silver platters. Pineapple-upside down cake makes a great dessert for 1920s-themed parties, since it was introduced during the era. Jello-molds, fancy salads, fruit cocktails, and shrimp cocktail are other ideas for Roaring '20s party foods.
