The lance was a popular weapon of the Sioux tribe.
The lance or spear was a common weapon of many Native American tribes. Not only were lances used to hunt, but they also had ceremonial value. Lances are decorated to reflect the craftsman, as well as to bring power to the user during a hunt or ceremony. Supplies to make a lance may be found at craft and hobby shops, outdoor outfitters, and in nature.
Instructions
1. Shave the piece wood down with a knife or turn it on a lathe until it is round. Sand it down to make it smooth with the sandpaper.
2. Cut a slot in the end of the lance for the spear head to fit into. This notch needs to be as deep as the tang on the end of the spear head. The tang is the part of the spear head that fits into the wood and holds the head into place. Be careful not to make the notch too large, as it needs to be a tight fit.
3. Glue the tang into place. Coat the shaft around the spearhead with glue. Wrap this area with leather strips. Knot the end tightly and wipe away any excess glue. Let dry completely.
4. Add decoration to your lance. Use strips of leather, feathers or pieces of bead work. You can also carve designs into the shaft of the lance with a knife or other woodworking tools. Let all glue dry before hanging the lance for display.
