How to Draw a Boa Constrictor
Boa constrictors are huge, beautiful snakes with an elaborate pattern on their skin. They are sometimes kept as pets but are predators in the wild, earning their name by constricting and squeezing the life from their victims. Drawing them, although very easy, is a bit tedious because of the amount of detail in their scales and patterns. The key is to concentrate on one part of the snake at a time and use a photo as a reference so that you aren't left worrying about detail and can instead concentrate on creating a quality drawing.
Instructions
1. Use a pencil to create the snake's main outline on a piece of paper. The snakes are large, very long, and sometimes curl into a pile with their heads poised upward. Whichever position you choose, make sure that the head is broad with a slightly open mouth and large jaw and that the tail is pointed.
2. Add eyes to the snake's head. Boa constrictor's eyes are dark, almond shaped, and appear directly on each side of the head. Shade the eyes with the side of your pencil. Draw a small tongue that protrudes from the mouth and is split at the tip.
3. Look at a picture of a boa constrictor to use as a reference so that you can add the pattern on the skin. The entire snake is covered in small scales and the pattern is usually dark and diamond shaped. Draw the outline of the pattern before actually filling it in with the side of your pencil, letting the darkness of the shading vary. The underbelly of the snake is light and pattern free.
4. Use an eraser to remove any uneven or stray lines.
