Showgirl costumes are completely customizable to camouflage trouble spots or show off your body, depending on the type of event you will be attending. As you plan a costume, you can go with a theme and add as many or as few embellishments as you like.
Costume Base
Depending on the type of showgirl you want to be, you may be able to make the costume base out of things you already own. To show a lot of skin, start with a bikini or bra and underwear set; add sequins, rhinestones or hanging crystals to add sparkle and shine. For a more covered look, use a corset paired with a matching short skirt. Add embellishments to the bottom part of your costume, like sparkly ribbons, sequined belts or decorative trim. Don't be afraid to go overboard; showgirls are not known for costuming restraint.
Skirt and Bustle
Many showgirls' skirts are shorter in front to show off the legs in front and allow for easy movement. If you want to add an extra surprise or create a more covered backside, use a skirt that has many colored layers of crinoline or ruffles underneath. Cut the skirt so the front is much shorter so the colors and layers on the inside of the back side of the skirt are visible. If you are wearing a bikini-style bottom, add a dramatic feathered bustle to the back. Sew together feather boas so they attach to the back of your waist and cascade down the back of your legs.
Headpiece
To make even a simple showgirl costume more dramatic, focus on the headpiece. Arrange a bunch of tall feathers so the edges fall outward like a fountain. Wrap the bottom of the feathers in a sparkly ribbon to keep them together; you may need to arrange them around a piece of a toilet paper roll to keep them in place. Glue the entire arrangement to a wide headband that will fit tightly on your head to keep the feathers in place. For an extra touch, add sequined wires in the feathers or sparking rhinestones.
Legs and Footwear
Showgirl costumes are made to show off the legs. Finish your costume with eye-catching hose: consider fishnet thigh-high stockings with garters, or look for tights in bold patterns. If you are confident in your legs, add a garter to draw even more attention or wrap your calves in crisscross ribbons. Complete the look with sky-high heels or tall boots.
